Actress. She appeared in around 30 B-movies, and retains a cult following for the 1945 “Detour”. Born Bernice Maxine Lyon, she was raised in Dallas until age nine when her family moved to Los Angeles. Describing herself as “star-struck”, she enrolled in Max Reinhardt’s acting school, and made her screen debut in the 1943 “One Dangerous Night”. Her greatest success came with Edgar G. Ulmer’s “Detour”  in which she portrayed a cigarette-puffing blackmailer. The movie remains in print and a favorite of film noir fans. Miss Savage continued to play “bad girls”, but her career slowed with her 1947 marriage to agent Burt D’Armand. After some television work (“Death Valley Days”; “The Ford Television Theatre”) in the 1950s, she moved to New York and made commercials and industrial films. With D’Armand’s death in 1968 she moved back to Los Angeles and worked as a legal secretary. Miss Savage returned to the silver screen in the 1986 “Fire With Fire”…in 2007, she played director Guy Maddin’s mother in “My Winnipeg. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences declared her “Icon and legend” in 2005.
