Child Actress. Carter was discovered at the age of four while she and her mother were riding on a bus in Los Angeles, by a 20th Century-Fox employee who introduced her to producer-director Herbert Brenon, who she auditioned for and landed a role in 1941’s ‘The Last of the Duanes’. Although she will best remembered for her starring role as Amy Reed in the 1944 film ‘The Curse of the Cat People’, among some of the 17 films she also appeared in were ‘I Married a Witch’ (1942), ‘The North Star’ (1943), ‘The Virginian’ (1946), ‘The Fabulous Dorseys’ (1947), ‘The Two Mrs. Carrolls’ (1947), ‘Ruthless’ (1948), ‘Blondie Hits the Jackpot’ (1949) and ‘The Member of the Wedding’ (1952), usually in roles as a child of such stars as Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Muni, Veronica Lake, Bing Crosby, Fredric March and Barbara Stanwyck. She gradually left acting after she contracted polio in 1948. She later attended Occidental College in Los Angeles (passing up a role in the 1955 Stanley Kramer movie ‘Not as a Stranger’ because she had a final that day), did work for Lux Radio Theater, playing Cary Grant’s daughter in the radio adaptation of ‘Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House’ and also hosted a radio show. Carter, who went on to teach school in California and Washington, died after a nine-year battle with ovarian cancer.  (bio by: Louis M.)
