Alex Stewart

Born and raised in London, England to Patricia and Alexander Stewart, Alex was one of seven children. When Alex was fifteen the family moved to Jamaica where he attended high school and began to fall in love with sports. He was an all around excellent athlete but primarily enjoyed Rugby and Boxing. He had been boxing since the age of 8 at times against his father’s wishes. When the family moved again to America to settle in Brooklyn, Alex would move as well, however, he continued boxing with his Jamaican team.

Alex won the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 1983 and would be apart of the Jamaican 1984 Olympic Team competing in the Los Angeles Games. He went to the Golden Gloves Finals in 1985 and produced one of the most thrilling matches ever fought.

His professional heavyweight-boxing career brought him in contact with some of the greatest names in the sport. Nicknamed “The Destroyer” for his powerful entrance into the professional world of boxing, he would fight Holyfield, Moorer, Foreman and Tyson.

But it was out of the ring where his true nature was revealed.
His strong spirit and courageous character made him a true friend. He was kind and honest with a great sense of humor. Above all things he loved his wife of 31 years, Angella. Together they raised their only daughter, Ajay-Tenille. Alex was a family man and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them.

In 1991 Alex would retire from the professional boxing world. He remained active by mentoring and training young competitors and giving back to the sport that was so good to him.

Alex is survived by his beloved wife and daughter Angella and Tenille. He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings: Hortens, Dennis, Velma, Grivil, Kay and Tracey. His friend Michael will miss him.

A celebration of Alex’s life will be on Tuesday, November 29th at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral will be 10:00am on Wednesday, November 30th at Oneness Rehoboth Apostolic Church, 125 E 3rd Street, Mt Vernon, NY. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx NY.. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation be made in Alex’s name to the Lupus Foundation of America.
