David Margulies, an actor whose range took him from Broadway to Ghostbusters!, has died, according to his agent, Mary Harden.

David Margulies, who was 78, was perhaps best known for playing the Mayor of New York in Ghostbusters andGhostbusters II, but his career stretches back to the 1950s, when he launched a stage career off-Broadway. Margulies made his Broadway debut in a 1973 production of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh, and later appeared in noted plays from Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs to Tony Kushner’sAngels In America.

His most recent appearance on Broadway was in a 2003 revival of the musical Wonderful Town starring Jennifer Westfeldt and Donna Murphy. His work off-Broadway continued past that — earning him an Actors Equity Richard Seff Award in 2007, for productions of All That I Will Ever Be and The Accomplices  as did his credits in regional theater.

Margulies’ screen career also began in the ’70s, Over the years, he appeared in numerous TV series, among them Kojak, NYPD Blue, Chicago HopeLaw & Order andThe Good Wife. He had a recurring role on The Sopranos as Tony Soprano’s lawyer, Neil Mink.
