Jane Bowles (Jane Bowles)
Writer. She was born in New York (United States) and died in Málaga (Andalucia, Spain). Her first novel La Phaeton Hypocrite was printed privately and no copies survive. Despite of her lesbianism, she married the gay writer Paul Bowles in 1938, who remain her husband until her death in 1973. Her health declined and in 1968, she left Tangier where lived, and made her way to a sanatorium in Málaga. She was diagnosed as a manic-depressive psychotic and she spent the next five years in psychiatric hospitals in Spain, where she died in 1973. She is remembered for her books “Two Serious Ladies” and “In The Summer House.” When the cemetery was renovated, thanks to the efforts of the municipality of Málaga and the Association of Friends of San Miguel Cemetery, her remains were moved to a new grave which was unveiled October 1999.
