George Melvin Holley, Sr (George Melvin Holley)

George Melvin Holley, Sr

Automotive Engineer and Designer. In 1899, he and his brother Earl founded the Holley Motor Company and sold 600 Holley Motorette automobiles between 1902 and 1906. But it was their design of the Holley carburetor that revolutionized gasoline engine development. In 1903 the Holley Carburetor Company produced carburetors for the Curved Dash Oldsmobile and then became the major carburetor supplier to Ford, Pierce-Arrow, Winton, Oldsmobile and Buick. Their products were also used by  major companies for the production of motorcycles, race cars, farm vehicles, industrial engines, aircraft and marine engines. The Holley Carburetor Company of Detroit, Michigan, became the world’s largest independent manufacturer of carburetors. In 1971, the Antique Automobile Club of America’s George M. Holley Award was named in his honor and is presented for vehicle restoration. Both brothers were inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1995.
