Author, Screenwriter. Best remembered for his novel “A Kind of Loving” (1960), which was made into a 1962 motion picture adaptation. The son of a coal miner, he dropped out of grammar school at age sixteen to work as a draftsman with a local engineering company. After marrying and beginning his family, he initiated his writing career with the penning of “A Kind of Loving” in 1960 and with found success from a storyline which depicted the working class, an unhappy marriage and frankness about sexuality. He followed this with a collection of short stories titled “The Desperadoes” (1961) and the novels “Ask Me Tomorrow” (1962) and “Joby” (1964). In addition, he contributes stories to the British TV programs “Armchair Theatre”, “A Raging Calm” (1974) and “The Cost of Loving” (1977). (bio by: C.S.)
