Painter. He was born in Hamburg, Germany. During World War II, his family fled to Palestine and later to Paris, where he studied with Anton Fuchs and Fernand Leger. Klarwein won international success when his painting “Annunciation” was used by Santana for the cover image of their second album, “Abraxas” (1970). Klarwein then designed the covers of two Miles Davis albums, “Bitches Brew” and “Live-Evil” (1971), as well as a powerful portrait of Jimi Hendrix and a cover for Earth, Wind and Fire. His style was influenced by Surrealism and he became friends with painter Salvador Dali. From 1967 to 1983 Klarwein lived in New York,  where his studio was frequented by Miles Davis, Jackie Kennedy, Jimi Hendrix, Timothy Leary, and other notables. He later settled in Deià, Mallorca, Spain. A prolific painter, his more than 600 works include “Nativity”, “Artist and Model”, “Evil”, “Chez Sphinx”, “Grain of Sand”, “Flight to Egypt”, “Camouflage”, “Wet Curve”, “New York Angel”, “Still Life with Clawfish”, “Spanish Kitchen”, and “Visit”. His artwork has been widely shown in galleries throughout the world.
