Richard Cain (Richard Cain)

Richard Cain

Organized Crime Figure. Richard Cain was born in Chicago but grew up in Owosso, Michigan. He was made into the Chicago Outfit early in life, despite the fact that his grandfather had been a prominent anti-Mafia activist in The Patch. He joined the Chicago Police Department in the 1950’s, functioning as a double agent. Cain was highly intelligent, spoke several languages, and served as a bagman between the police force and the Outfit. He was fired from the CPD in the early 1960’s for a series of illegal activities. Cain soon turned up in Miami where he trained Cuban exiles in preparation for the Bay of Pigs invasion, most probably acting as a contract agent for the CIA. He was a chief aide of Sam Giancana, and was riding high until he was convicted in 1967 for stealing drugs that had been recovered from a narcotics bust. After serving four years in prison, he joined the exiled Giancana in Mexico and resumed his position as his emissary. He also became a secret agent for the FBI, trying to take over all Chicago gambling operations for himself while giving information about his competition to the feds. Cain also partnered up with Marshall Caifano in a burglary ring, and this would prove his downfall. After some of the burglars had been busted, Caifano figured Cain had snitched them out. He was shotgunned to death by two ski-masked gunmen on December 20, 1973 in a sandwich shop at 1117 W. Grand Blvd, shortly after meeting with Caifano. Cain has long been suspected by conspiracy theorists of possibly being involved in an assassination plot against President John F. Kennedy. According to one theory it was Richard Cain, not Lee Harvey Oswald, who fired from the infamous sixth-story window of the Texas School Book Depository. (bio by: Dennis Rice)
