Criminal. Known as ‘The Shoe Fetish Killer.’ A native of Webster, South Dakota, he was a former electrician, who became serial kiler, and later one of Oregon’s most notorious inmates. Born to Henry Brudos and his wife Eileen, his troubles began when he was very young. He began a weird obsession with women’s shoes and clothing, he was beaten by his parents, and he was always sick including measles, violent headaches, and infections. In his later years Brudos went to high school at the North Salem High School in Dallas, Oregon, college at the Oregon State University and then the Salem Technical Vocational School, before joining the United States Army and serving at Fort Ord, California, and Fort Gordon, Georgia. After leaving the army he got a job working at the Corvallis, Oregon, radio station. In 1956 he was diagnosed as a Borderline schizophrenic and spent 9 months in the hospital. In 1962 he was married and later had a child. From 1956 to 1969, Brudos troubles again plagued him. He became violent to women and began obsessing about them, and finally to rape, and then murder. In 1969 while dressed in drag he abducted his first victim, a 19 year old woman from a parking garage named Karen Sprinkler, who he raped and murdered. After some failed abductions and rapes, Brudos went on killed at least 11 women including Linda Salee, Jan Whitney, and possibly Linda Slawson whose body was never found. Brudos would often set up blind dates through the Oregon State University and find his victims this way. He was later identified by a woman who had claimed to have gone out with him on one of these dates (he also tried to abduct her), and on May 28, 1969, he was arrested by the police. On June 4, 1969, he is arraigned for the murder of Karen Sprinker, and then Jan Whitney, and Linda Salee. On July 17, 1969, Brudos is sentenced to 3 consecutive life sentences for the 3 murders. Although he was convicted of 3 murders, he confessed to four, and was suspected of at least 6 others. On May 25, 1977, his last appeal is rejected by the appellate courts. In 1999 at the age of 60, Brudos was up for parole but that quickly denied. On the morning of March 29, 2006, Brudos died at the age of 67, at the Oregon State Prison, from colon cancer.
