William Hoare

Artist. Painter noted for his pastels and a leading portraitist in his home city of Bath, until the arrival of Gainsborough in 1759. His work has often been described as serious and dreary. His father apprenticed him to Guiseppi Grisoni with whom he travelled to Rome in 1728. On returning to England in 1738, he settled in Bath, where he became a governor of the hospital. He painted distinguished notables including; Charles Fitzroy, 2nd Duke of Grafton and William Pitt The Elder, Earl of Chatham. Through Grisoni. he developed an admiration of the great Italian masters. He lived out the remainder of his life in Bath, “in a handsome and genteel manner.” (bio by: s.canning)  Family links:  Children:  Anne Hoare (____ – 1821)*  Mary Hoare (____ – 1820)*  Prince Hoare (1755 – 1834)* *Calculated relationship
