Noted Master Architect. He was a well-known architect who specialized in the design of railway stations in London. He was born in London and studied under the tutorship of his father, Thomas junior, master-mason to Robert Adam at Syon House, Middlesex. His grandfather, Thomas senior, was also a successful architect. In 1808 he entered the Royal Adademy Schools before travelling Europe which expanded his knowledge of classical architecture. He was surveyor of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and founded the Institute of British Architects in 1834. He was influenced by Italian architecture which was evident in his design of the Doric Euston Arch (1837) at Euston Station – London’s first railway station. In 1838, he also designed Birmingham Curzon Street Station. His son Philip Charles (1822-1892) was last in the family line of architects.
