Painter. Considered one of the most distinctive painters of his era. His work is noted for its simple,  quiet subjects and subdued tones. During the late 20th century he was re-discovered internationally, and his paintings have obtained huge prices at auction houses in London and New York. In 2005 the British Broadcasting Corp.
