Comic Book Artist. He was legendary cartoonist best known for his “Archie” comic book character. In 1949, at age 16, he began his career as a staff colorist for Timely Comics and within two years became color department manager for Marvel Comics. With Marvel, he drew the Millie the Model titles, “Kathy”, “My Girl Pearl”, plus collaborated coloring for the company’s early superhero “Fantastic Four”, “Incredible Hulk”, “Spider-Man” and other foundational comic characters. Leaving Marvel in 1969, he started with DC Comics where he drew the teen titles “Debbie”, “Scooter” and “Binky” until 1972, when he began a decades long relationship with the “Archie” comic book series. His work also appeared across the entire DC Comics line to include “Jughead”, “Josie and the Pussycats”, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew”. He also drew the “Archie” newspaper strip, (1975-80). His final work for DC was released in 2010, however he continued to freelance for other companies, notably producing an Archie parody for Bongo Comics “Simpsons Comics”, plus “Nancy Drew” and “Three Stooges” graphic novels for Papercutz. He was honored with an Inkpot Award in 1994, the Gold Key Award in 2002, 2012 and inducted into the National Cartoonists Hall of Fame in 2012. He died from complications of a stroke at age 82.
