Charles Alexander Shibell

Western Lawman. He headed west to California in 1860 and in 1862 he was a teamster employed by the California Infantry which took him across Arizona. He began ranching near Sonoita, Arizona and lost a number of stock to the Indians. During this time, he was also engaged in mining and some freighting. Later, he was a customs inspector at El Paso, Texas. In 1875 he returned to Arizona and was appointed deputy Sheriff of Pima County, then elected Sheriff from 1876 to 1880. On July 27, 1880, he appointed his good friend Wyatt Earp deputy Sheriff in Pima County. During this period of time Tombstone was in Pima County and he with the Earps had financial interests in the community. In his later years he ran and owned the Palace and Occidental Hotels in Tucson, served again as deputy Sheriff and later recorder for Pima County until his death.  (bio by: John “J-Cat” Griffith)  Family links:  Spouse:  Mercedes Sais Quiroz Shibell (1849 – 1875)*  Children:  Lillie M.
