Dan Farrell (Dan Farrell)

Dan Farrell

Photojournalist. During a storied career that spanned five decades at the New York Daily News, he will perhaps be best remembered for capturing John F. Kennedy, Jr., (“John-John”) saluting his father’s casket following President John F. Kennedy’s funeral mass on November 25, 1963. His iconic photograph was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize but lost to fellow photographer Bob Johnson who captured Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas. Raised in Brooklyn, he began his career at the Daily News as a copy boy during the early 1950s, prior to his service with the United States Navy during the Korean War. Among his other notable assignments include coverage of The Beatles’ arrival in American in February 1964 and their concert at Shea Stadium in 1965. Additionally, he covered historic sports moments including the Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier bout in 1971, the New York Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets. He died from pneumonia. (bio by: C.S.)
