Attorney. He was council for the defence in many notorious murder cases. He was educated at Rugby School and Cambridge, and intended to enter the priesthood. He soon decided to pursue a career as an actor, but was unable to memorize scripts and so instead trained in law, being called to the bar in 1888. He never forgot his acting experience however, and made use of theatrical techniques when making speeches as a barrister. He specialized in defending murder suspects, and soon built a reputation by defending a number of high profile cases. Among his many courtroom victories was his defence of Ronald Light in 1910 for the infamous “Green Bicycle Murder”, whish was achieved in the face of overwhelming evidence and Light’s lying to the police. His reputation led to him receiving letters from Jack the Ripper, who wished him to defend him if he was caught. He was also briefed to defend Dr Crippen, but Crippen rejected his line of defence and was later hanged. He entered politics at age 42, and was elected Conservative Member of Parliament for Southport in 1900. He served for six years, before representing East Toxteth from 1910 until 1916. His legal career was celebrated long after his death, and inspired the British television drama serial “Shadow of the Noose” in 1988.
