Rayner Goddard (Rayner Goddard)
Lord Chief Justice Goddard was a notorious British judge of the early to mid 20th century and is often referred to as the “hanging judge.” Most famously Lord Goddard (who was the highest ranking British judge at the time) is remembered for the Derek Bentley trial in which Goddard has since been criticised for his obvious misdirection of the jury and for his prejudice against Bentley who was later hanged. Following his funeral and cremation at Golders Green on the 2nd June, 1971 Lord Goddard’s ashes were scattered in Section 2-B. (bio by: Kieran Smith)
