Petra Cabot

Inventor, Artist.  Born Emma Mearns in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 21, 1907, she was an only child. In 1945 she crafted a montage of newspaper clippings and photographs making up a historical mural representing the evolution of the National Maritime Union, which is 840 square feet in size and located at the union’s New York City offices, currently a hotel. She had a home in Manhattan but died at her home in Woodstock. At age 19, she married the poet Laurence Jordan, and was divorced from him in 1931, then married medical writer and publisher Blake Cabot in 1937 (he died in 1974). In 1952 she copyrighted her invention of the famous “Skotch Kooler”.  Hamilton Metal Products Company manufactured this famous product which was billed “… could keep ice cream firm for two to three hours without ice.” It had a base color of beige, covered with plaid, and was “insulated”. She was foremost a painter.  From 1938 until 1950, she worked for the designer Russel Wright, during which time she designed the food pavillion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.  She had a home in Manhattan but died at her home in Woodstock, at the age of 99 years.  (bio by: Barbara Elsie Feist Stienstra)
