American Architect. Burns graduated with a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1875. From 1881 through 1907, he was a partner in the firm of Peters and Burns of Dayton, Ohio, which specialized in institutional and educational buildings. He moved to Los Angeles in 1907 and three years later, formed a partnership with Sumner Hunt which lasted until 1930. Among structures the firm designed, were the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, the Vermont Square Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, the Wilshire Country Club, the Ebell Club of Pomona, the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, the administration buildings on the campus of Scripps College in Claremont, as well as many private residences in Los Angeles and Pasadena. In 1921 the partnership, along with Roland Coate and Aurele Vermeulen, designed the headquarters of the Automobile Club of Southern California on Figueroa Street.
