Stephen Hubert Avenel Haggard

Actor. Stephen Hubert Avenel Haggard, first child of British diplomat Godfrey Digby Napier Haggard and his French Canadian/American wife Georgianna Marie Ruel Haggard, was born on 21 Mar 1911 in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America. His middle name Hubert was in honor of his maternal grandfather Hubert Ruel. Stephen’s diplomat father had been posted to Guatemala. In the spring of 1912, when Stephen was one year old, he journeyed with his pregnant mother to the United States, destination Somersworth, New Hampshire. (Somersworth was where his mother and her family had settled after their immigration to the United States about 1893.) Less than two months after their arrival, his mother gave birth to his baby brother, Paul Amyand Napier Haggard. However, the infant died the following year and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Somersworth. Stephen and his mother rejoined his father in Guatemala and, in 1914, his sister Joan was born in Guatemala City. After his father’s next posting, to France, his sister Virginia was born in Paris. As the children of a diplomat, Stephen and his sisters were raised in a variety of countries. In Sep 1935, Stephen married Morna Christian Gillespie in Oxfordshire, England. They had three children. Stephen pursued acting, both in theatre and film. His films include, “The Young Mr. Pitt” (1942), “Johnson Was No Gentleman” (1939), “Jamaica Inn” (1939), “The Tempest” (1939), “The Duchess Of Malfi” (1938), and “Whom The Gods Love” (1936), in which he played the role of Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He also composed music for the 1941 film, “Old Bill And Son.” He was also an author and poet. When WWII started, Stephen joined the army as a British Intelligence officer. He was posted to the Middle East. In 1943, Stephen became despondent (over a combination of personal and professional issues). He died on a train of self-inflicted wounds on 25 Feb 1943. Stephen Hubert Avenel Haggard is interred in the Heliopolis War Cemetery in Cairo. Primary sources include passenger lists, marriage records, numerous newspaper articles, online articles, and my family copy of the 1942 Généalogie de la Famille Goulet-Ruel.
