Leila McIntyre

Actress. Better known as the wife of actor John Hyams and the mother of actress Leila Hyams, she had a significant stage and film career of her own. A New York native, she made a name for herself in Vaudeville comedy and begining with her turn as Jill in the 1904 “Mother Goose” was seen on Broadway a number of times, her credits including “The Girl of My Dreams” (1911) and 1914’s “The Dancing Duchess”. With time Leila and John brought their daughter into their act and when father and child moved on to Hollywood Leila joined them. Begining with 1929’s “Hurricane” she had small roles in more than three dozen films, many of them starring the younger Leila. In 1936 she portrayed Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln twice, in both “The Plainsman” and “The Prisoner of Shark Island”; following John’s 1940 death she remained in Southern California and continued performing for a time, earning her final credit in 1946’s “The Hoodlum Saint”. At her death she was buried under her married name, “Leila Hyams”.
