Nanda Karnataki (Nanda Karnataki)

Nanda Karnataki

Actress. Known by the single name “Nanda”, she is remembered as a child performer who transitioned into a long Bollywood career in dozens of Hindi and Marathi movies. The child of a noted theatrical family in what was then British India, she was more-or-less forced into show business when her father’s sudden death left her and her siblings in difficult financial straits. Known as ‘Baby Nanda’, a name that stuck throughout her career, she made her 1948 silver screen bow in “Mandir”, appeared in such features as “Jaggru” and “Jagriti”, received her initial significant adult role in the 1956 “Toofan Aur Diya”, and earned the first of her five Filmfare Best Supporting Actress nominations in 1957’s “Bhabhi”. Established as a star following the 1959 musical “Chhoti Bahen”, she captured the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for 1960’s “Anchal” and over the next decade starred in numerous features, on eight occasions partnered with actor Shashi Kapoor, their best known collaboration probably the 1965 “Jab Jab Phool Khile”. Nanda appeared in romances like the 1962 “Hum Dono” as well as in such action thrillers as 1965’s “Gumnaam” and “Ittefaq” (1969), but as the 1970s progressed her offers became fewer; she received her last Filmfare nomination for 1982’s romantic hit “Prem Rog”, then retired. Seldom seen in public over her final three decades, she lived out her days in the Bombay suburbs and died of a heart attack. At her demise many of her films were preserved on DVD.
