Makeup Artist. He was head of the makeup department at MGM Studios beginning in 1939. He developed many innovations that are still in use today. Through out his long career with MGM he is credited in over two hundred films. Some of his credits include, “A Christmas Carol” (1938), “Ninotchka” (1939), “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), “Pride and Prejudice” (1940), “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (1941), “Meet Me In St. Louis” (1944), “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” (1944), “The Harvey Girls” (1946), “Neptune’s Daughter” (1949) and “Annie Get Your Gun” (1950). Some of Jack Dawn’s cinematic creations aided disfigured soldiers of World War ll. He worked closely with San Diego Naval Hospital in 1943, creating inlays for hands and faces so that patients could appear normal between multiple plastic surgery operations. He retired from MGM in 1956 and passed away five years later. Because there was no Oscar category for film makeup during his career, Dawn never received an Academy Award for any his remarkable makeup creations. He is interred in an unmarked grave.
