Actor, Comedian. He is remembered for his comedic roles in the British television sitcoms “I Didn’t Know You Cared” (1975 to 1979, as ‘Les’), “Last of the Summer Wine’ (1973 to 1983 as ‘Sid’), and “All Our Saturdays” (February to March 1973, as ‘Wilf’). Born one of five children, he received his education at the Roman Catholic parish school in Saint Ann’s, Stretford, Greater Manchester, England between 1928 and 1939. He was then employed as a miner before gaining an engineering apprenticeship at Metropolitan-Vickers, Trafford Park. He worked there for a number of years before he became interested in acting. During the 1930s and 1940s he began performing comedy routines around local pubs and social clubs with his brother Tony. As a double act the brothers began calling themselves The Comer Brothers, and in 1957 they performed in a children’s theater production, before participating in an ITV talent show “Bid For Fame” which aired in 1958. The following year, the brothers won the first prize of £1,000 and a film contract with the Boulting Brothers in the “Butlins National Talent Contest.” The first film they appeared in was “I’m All Right Jack” (1959), with Peter Sellers and Richard Attenborough, playing two trade Union Shop stewards, followed by “A Taste of Honey” (1961), with Rita Tushingham. After the demise of their act, he continued his career and went onto appear in the Boulting Brothers film “The Family Way” (1967), in which he played the role of father-of-the-bride to Hayley Mill’s character, while her real life father John Mills portrayed her father-in-law. His other notable films include, “Happy Deathday” (1968), “Battle of Britain” (1969), “Wuthering Heights” (1970), “There’s A Girl In My Soup” (1970), “Mr. Forbush and the Penguins” (1970), “Villain” (1971), and “The Lovers!” (1973). His other British television credits include roles in the series “Bless This House,’ “Play for Today,” “The Life of Riley,” and “All Creatures Great and Small.” He died of throat cancer at the age of 59.
