Actor. He was born in St.Louis, Missouri. In 1931, he helped found the Group Theatre which specialized in dramas. He made his New York City stage debut in The God of Vengeance. Two years later, Carnovsky joined the Theatre Guild’s acting company and appeared in such plays as “Uncle Vanya”, “Saint Joan,” “The Brothers Karamazov” and “The Doctor’s Dilemma.” His screen career abruptly ended during the 1950’s when Carnovsky, along and his actress wife, Phoebe Brand, went before the House Un-American Activities Committee after they had been named by director Elia Kazan as communists. They refused to “name names” themselves and were subsequently blacklisted by Hollywood. He was, however, invited by actor John Houseman to join the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut, where he appeared in such parts as Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice” and as “King Lear.” On films, he appeared in “The Life of Emile Zola,” “Edge of Darkness,” “Rhapsody in Blue,” “Dead Reckoning,” “Cyrano de Bergerac”, “Vu du Pont (A View from the Bridge”) and “The Gambler.” He was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1979. His wife, Phoebe Brand, passed away on July 3, 2004, at the age of 96 from pneumonia. He died in Easton, Connecticut. According the newspapers, he was cremated. (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
