Ellen Demming

Actress. She is best remembered for her role as ‘Meta Bauer’ on the CBS daytime television soap opera “The Guiding Light,” which she played from 1953 until 1974. Born Betty Ellen Weber, she graduated Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and studied under actress Maude Adams. She started her acting career on the stage in Summer Stock, regional theater, and appeared in Clare Tree Major Children’s Theatre touring company before landing her role on “The Guiding Light.” In 1959 she starred in the role of ‘Mary’ in the off-Broadway production of “Family Portrait.” After her retirement from “The Guiding Light,” she moved to South Salem, New York and later to Vermont, where she died at the age of 79. She was married to television producer and stage director Hal Thompson. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
