Jill Bennett (Jill Bennett)

Jill Bennett

Actress. Born Nora Noel Jill Bennett in Penang to British parents, she relocated to England and trained at Amersham Repertory in Guilford, and at prestigious drama school RADA; making her stage debut in 1949 at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford upon Avon. Her feature film debut was alongside Rex Harrison in the 1951 movie ‘The Long Dark Hall’. She went on to appear in a variety of films, including ‘The Nanny’ (1965), ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ (1968) and ‘Julius Caesar’ (1970), making the occasional foray into television. She married twice, most notably to playwright John Osborne in 1968. Their 1978 divorce ended non-amicably and without producing any children. After suffering from many years of depression apparently abetted by her marriage to Osborne, she committed suicide by taking an overdose of barbituates. She was aged 58 years. (bio by: JPI)
