Actress. She is best remembered for her numerous acting roles on the stage before the advent of movies and television.  She was also the mother of a dynasty of actors and actresses, her seven children with Jacob Adler all entered the theater and became noted in their own right. She was noted as the first actress to act naturally on the Yiddish stage.  She would make the audience forget that they were watching an actress, and made them believe that they were looking at a real person.  This changed the nature of acting and was the harbinger of film acting.  In contrast, her husband, famed actor Jacob Adler, spoke onstage in the traditional manner, speaking his lines as if he were playing “Hamlet”.  Sarah would be the mother of several prominent actors and actresses, including Jay Adler, Luther Adler, Julia, Florence, Frances, Charles and Stella Adler.  It was Stella who became America’s foremost acting instructor (her best student was Marlon Brando).
