Jack Arnold

Motion Pictures, Television Director. A former stage and screen actor, he joined in the US Signal Corps in the 1940s and worked with famed documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty. After the war Arnold directed and produced about 25 documentaries for government agencies and private industries, getting an Oscar nomination for best documentary feature for “With These Hands” (1951). Tackling fiction films in the early 1950s with Universal Studios he specialized in science-fiction and horror films, among them “It Came from Outer Space” (1953), “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954), “Tarantula” (1955) and “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957). His work also included westerns (“The Man from Bitter Ridge” 1955, “No Name on the Bullet” 1958), dramas (“The Tattered Dress” 1957, “Man in the Shadow” 1958) and comedies (“The Mouse That Roared” 1959, “A Global Affair” 1964). From the sixties on Arnold worked mostly for television, producing and (or) directing series like “Gilligan`s Island” (1964/65), “It Takes a Thief” (1968/69), “Ellery Queen” (1975) and “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century” (1981).  He died from arteriosclerosis.
