Gabriel Duvall (Gabriel Duvall)
US Supreme Court Justice, US Congressman. He served as the Congressman from Maryland’s second district from November 1794 to March 1796. From 1796 to 1802 he was Chief Justice of the General Court of Maryland. He served as First Comptroller of the US Treasury for the next five years. President James Madison appointed him to the United States Supreme Court in 1811 and he served until he resigned with old age in 1834. In his 23 years on the bench, John Marshall served as Chief Justice the entire time. During that time the two held differing opinions in only two cases and Duvall wrote an opinion in seventeen cases.
