Saloon Keeper, Folk Figure. Sam Bean was raised in Langtry, Texas. His father was a famous Judge known as “Law, West of the Pecos,” his mother was a Spanish woman. His parents were married in San Antonio soon after the Civil War. About 1914 Sam moved to Del Rio, Texas, opening a saloon and dance hall. Sam was married to a Spanish lady and he was about 30 years old at the time of his death. He and his wife was going to a Mexican Fiesta when they met up with Cliserio Orasco and his wife, they had been having a family feud. It is said that when they encountered one another Sam pulled his revolver and began shooting Cliserio, never fatally only slight wounds, firing four bullets from his revolver, one of the bullets went through Cliserio’s right shoulder preventing him from using that arm. However, Cliserio used his left hand and stabbed Sam nine times. Fatally stabbing him twice in the abdomen, which caused Sam Bean to die at 1 a.m. on Tuesday May 7, 1903. Cliserio Orasco was a quiet well liked painter. Sam was the youngest son of his parents and he was survived by a brother Roy and two sisters. No charges were ever brought against Cliserio Orasco due to the fact everyone agreed that Sam Bean was in the wrong, Cliserio was only defending himself.
