Murray Wier (Murray Wier)

Murray Wier

Professional Basketball Player.   Born Murray Neal Wier, he played the guard position for both the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and the Waterloo Hawks from 1948 to 1951.   He was a stellar four year starter at the University of Iowa where he was the NCAA Division I scoring leader and a consensus first team All-American in 1948.   He was drafted 48th by the Fort Wayne Pistons of the then Basketball Association of America in 1948, but chose to play for the Tri-Cities Blackhawks of the rival National Basketball League (later of the National Basketball Association after the BAA and NBL merged into one league).   He would play for the Blackhawks for three years before joining the Waterloo Hawks of the National Professional Basketball League in 1950.    He retired after the NPBL folded in 1951.    After retirement, he went into high school athletics in Iowa as a basketball coach and athletic director.
