Actor. Born James Richard Gammon, he was a well known character performer, best recognized for his rugged features and gravelly voice. He is best remembered for his role as Cleveland Indians manager Lou Brown in the motion pictures “Major League” (1989), “Major League II” (1994), and for his recurring role in the television series “Nash Bridges” from 1996 to 2001. Gammon began his television career in the early 1960s, appearing in the western classics “Gunsmoke”, “Bonanza”, “The Wild Wild West”, and “The Virginian”, and made his film debut in “Cool Hand Luke” (1967). He was also active in theatre and was nominated for a Best Actor Tony Award in 1996 for his performance in the Sam Shepard play “Buried Child.” His extensive credits include the films “Journey to Shiloh” (1968), “The Thousand Plane Raid” (1969), “A Man Called Horse” (1970), “Macon County Line” (1974), “The Pom Pom Girls” (1976), “Urban Cowboy” (1980), “Vision Quest” (1985), “Ironweed” (1987), “Running Cool” (1993), “Wyatt Earp” (1994), “One Man’s Hero” (1999), “Cold Mountain” (2003), “Silver City” (2004), “Altered” (2006), “Appaloosa” and “The New Daughter” (both 2009), and appearances in such TV shows as “The Invaders”, “The High Chaparral”, “The F.B.I.”, “Kung Fu”, “The Waltons”, “Barnaby Jones”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Cannon”, “Cagney and Lacey”, “Murder She Wrote”, “In the Heat of the Night”, “L.A. Law”, “Crossing Jordan”, “Monk”, and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
